Books I've Read While in the UK

I've been wanting to keep track of the books I've been reading while I've been here in the UK. From now on I'll post right after I read each book. Here are the books I've read so far.

Nineteen Eighty-Four-by George Orwell
A few days ago I decided I'd better start reading some of the classics. I usually stick to young adult books (mostly because they're the cleanest ones), but there are so many great books out there that I know I need to read. I looked up a few top 100 books lists, and this book seemed to be on all of them. Believe it or not, I'd never read it. So I checked it out from the library and this is the book I am reading right now. So far, I'm liking it, although when I read it at night, I have really wierd dreams.

Silas Marner-by George Eliot
This book was chosen for a Relief Society book club. I had never heard of it before, but thought I'd give it a chance. There was one part that I had a hard time getting through because it was a little boring, but overall I really liked it. It's a great story.

On Becoming Babywise-by Gary Ezzo and Robert Bucknam
This is a book about how to get your baby to sleep through the night. I read it and used it with Kimball. It worked great. I wanted to read it again to use for Addi, and so far I think it's going well. There are some things in the book that are a little extreme, but overall I like it because it just makes sense.

The Twilight Series-by Stephenie Meyer
Before I left for England every Young Woman I knew was reading or had read these books. My sister-in-law, who is 14, absolutely loves them. When I asked her what the first one was about she told me it was a love story. I later found out the series is about vampires. A vampire love story, sounds interesting, but I wasn't convinced I'd love them. When I got here to England and had no phone and no internet, I was really bored. I went to the local library and looked up these books, not knowing what else to read. So I've now read the first three. I liked the first one okay. I didn't love the second one, and the third one was just okay. They are a little too romantic for my taste. It got to be a little repetitive after a while. But I'll probably read the next one.

The Bartimaeus Trilogy-by Jonathan Stroud

A friend recommended these books when she found out I was living in England and had visited Prague. I'm so glad she did. I loved these books, especially the third. They are very cleverly written with footnotes and all. The footnotes are narrative inserts by one of the characters telling the story, and I think they really make the story.

Uglies-by Scott Westerfeld
While my 14 year old sister-in-law was here visiting us, she was reading this book. She really liked it, so when she was finished I started reading it. I actually didn't finish it because the book was not hers and she had to take it back with her. I requested it from the local library a few weeks ago, and they finally called me today to tell me they'd found it and it was waiting for me. I'll pick it up either today or tomorrow to finish it. It's not my favorite book. It's definitely written for teenagers. I almost put it down within the first couple hundred pages, but the story finally got a little better and now I want to finish it. Uglies is the first of a trilogy.

The Glass Castle-by Jeannette Walls
This book was also recommended by a friend here. I didn't love this book. It was a very depressing story with a few too many details for my liking. It is a true story which is what made me want to finish the book just to see what happened to the author.

Wow. You are an inspiration. I have to admit that I haven't even read one book while you've been away. Goes to show that I am not a huge reader...I do have a few books that I do want to read though...perhaps I'll start one soon. :)
You did it....I'll have to come here for future references.

I'm impressed you have time to read! Thanks for the ideas. And Babywise is a good book, overall...thanks for the tips. I've been starting to read again, and it is so refreshing.

My you have been busy! It was fun to see what you have been reading. I have friends who swear by Baby Wise, but I have other friends who prefer to call it Baby Nazi. I can't throw in my opinion because I really don't know what it says.

I haven't read 1984 or Silar Marner. I thought about buying the Uglies, but held off wanting to know if it was worth reading. I'll have to check it out. I own the The Bartimaeus Trilogy, but haven't read them and I've read all the Twilight books. Those books were a great idea, but filled with VERY poor writing, but I did like the storyline. I read all of them just after I finished Harry #7 and all I could think of was- I could write better than this and it's a New York Times bestseller! I will read the 4th a final book and I'm sure I'll enjoy it just like I did the first 3.

And I read a review of the Glass Castle and didn't want to go further. It did sound depressing.

Keep up the good work and continue to keep us informed on what we could or should be reading!

I'm sure there's no way I could choose a top ten list. Several of my favorites however, are on your list also, like Mockingbird and Life of Pi. But just in case you need a new good one to keep you busy here are a few of my other faves that maybe you haven't tried yet: The Red Tent, These Is My Words, Cane River, The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The Good Earth, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, The Goose Girl. I feel like I could go forever but I'll spare you. Thanks for all your good recommendations. I wish we lived closer so we could have a book club together. Love your guts!

Just for the record, I LOVE babywise for the same reason you said - it just makes sense. You don't have to follow it exactly, but it's totally worth reading. And about Uglies - I also felt the same way. It was okay, but seemed really forced to me. Are you familiar with goodreads? It's a website where you can list what you've read and review it, what you want to read and what you're reading now, and can compare lists with your friends. I'm on there, and I share lists with Jenni Cragun (Walton) who is also a rather prolific reader. It's been really fun - let me know if you join!

How do you find the time to read all of these books?? I'm feeling good if I finish one or two a month. I'm totally impressed. But I did love the Twilight series! I'm sad you didn't enjoy them as much. I'm keeping a list of good books, so keep 'em coming.
