National Air & Space Museum- Udvar Hazy Center
On July 9, we headed to the National Air & Space Museum. There are two air & space museums, one in Washington D.C., and one near Dulles airport. We went to the Udvar Hazy Center by the Dulles airport, and it didn’t disappoint.
At the watch tower.
There were all kinds of planes there and I can in no way remember many of the details. However, it was amazing.
Above shows one of the space shuttles used by NASA.
There were many types of helicopters and bi-planes.
But my absolute favorite plane was the Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird, the fastest jet ever.
This was a spy plane.
On its last flight, a world speed record was set. Lt. Col. Ed Yeilding and Lt. Col. Joseph Vida flew the jet from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. in only 1 hour, 4 minutes, and 20 seconds. It averaged 2,124 miles per hour. Can you imagine?
At the museum, there was a large TV monitor that was connected to a live feed where we could ask an expert any questions we wanted. We were able to talk to him and learn more about this incredible jet. The jet itself was massive being just over 17 feet long and just over 55 feet wide. It truly was remarkable.
We enjoyed our time at the National Air & Space Museum. I highly recommend visiting it if you’re in the area. I loved the message on the plane above.
